Why is loose lead walking important?

Remember that dog you saw,....walking on a loose lead without a care in the world,...their owner enjoying their time out and about with their doggo, then there's you, dripping in sweat, trying to stay calm and smiling sweetly as your 'little' bundle of joy pulls you about like a rag doll, your only option is to tug on that lead in an effort to relieve the strain.

It's fairly obvious to us all that pulling sharply on a dog's lead is not an appropriate or effective training technique, but I understand why people do that, often as a last resort and out of frustration.

It's much easier and kinder on your dog, to use training methods that reward desired behaviours. If you are having difficulty with teaching your dog to walk calmly on the lead, send us through an enquiry on the contact page and we'll give you a call to see how we can help.

It's worth noting that when a dog's neck is pulled sharply on a lead, there is a risk of injury to the neck and spine.

The sudden and forceful movement can cause whiplash, which can lead to strains or sprains of the neck muscles or ligaments, or even spinal cord injuries.

Also, if the dog is wearing a collar, the force of the pull can cause damage to the trachea, resulting in coughing, choking, or even collapse.

We can help.
