A Case Study in Ayrshire

Max's Story

In my home county of Ayrshire, Scotland, I undertook an interesting case of a slightly over excitable German Shepherd called Max. Living close to the amazing location of Culzean Castle, a short drive from Ayr Beach, Max, at 2 years old had won the hearts of his family but there was a problem.

His encounters with other dogs had started to inspire reactivity and aggression from him, as you can imagine this created challenges when taking him for a walk down his usual route along the River Ayr Walkway or into Rozelle Park.

I wanted to write about this as a case study to give you an understanding into how the desired results can be achieved by understanding our dog’s behaviour and establishing a training plan that addressed the behaviour without the need of force and intimidation.

The Case

Max's owners called me out to help address his aggressive tendencies. Starting in the home eventually progressed to working in local locations, including around Ayr Beach and Rozelle Park.

Observations and Assessment

I calmly observed Max during interactions with other dogs, conscious he was well travelled throughout Ayrshire, visiting family, and taking in locations like the Dean Park in Kilmarnock or Eglinton Country Park in Kilwinning. Through these observations, I pinpointed that Max's aggression primarily stemmed from fear and anxiety when encountering dogs he didn’t know.

Methods and Implementation

To address Max's aggression effectively, we established a training plan and focused on using simple techniques incorporating reward-based encouragement and mistake marking that emphasised developing trust and confidence in his owners.

Socialisation

Following some impressively consistent focus work by his owners over the coming weeks progressed to the green, lush and vast space at Rozelle Park in Ayr, where we introduced Max to one of my calm and well-mannered dogs. Gradually, he became more accustomed to her presence, learning appropriate ways to interact until we were confident enough to involve stranger dogs under careful supervision. This helped boost his socialisation skills and reduced aggressive responses.

Desensitisation

The family visited various locales throughout Ayrshire over the coming weeks and exposed Max to distant views of other dogs, gauging his threshold before moving closer, always with safety in the forefront of their minds, ensuring he did not become overwhelmed. Over time, he learned to remain composed in the presence of other dogs and focussed his trust on his owners, this allowed for calmer interactions and stress-free walks wherever they went in Ayrshire.

Reward-Based Encouragement

Using verbal praise or reward-based encouragement, we taught him to repeat desirable actions, replacing aggression with a more appropriate response.

Long-Term Progress

I’m proud to say that through consistent training from his owners, Max's progress was remarkable. His aggression significantly diminished, making walks throughout Ayrshire’s scenic towns and villages more enjoyable for both Max and his owners.

Max even formed new friendships, particularly with a neighbour’s dog they met at Culzean Castle, further reinforcing his positive social behaviours.

Conclusion

Max's success shows what can be achieved by using simple effective training techniques to overcome aggression in dogs. I enjoyed revisiting areas of my home county in Ayrshire, whenever I work in locations like Culzean Castle, Ayr Beach, and Dean Castle it rekindles a love of where I grew up.

By focusing on simple non aversive methods of dog training we were able to help Max overcome his fears and anxieties.

This case served as a testament to the enduring bond between dogs and their human companions, the work we’re willing to undertake to give our dogs a happy life and highlights the importance of understanding and addressing aggression with compassion and patience.

Max's journey is a story of triumph, and reminds us that with the right approach, and a little help, any dog can find harmony and happiness in the world around them.
