Do Dogs Feel Disappointment?

Do Dogs Feel Disappointment

After Bhruic and I watched Scotland slump out of yet another International Football Tournament I was left for a short period with that all too all too familiar feeling of disappointment. (Thanks Scotland!)

But as always, we'll bounce back ready to go again, as we always do.  A good lesson for other disappointments and setbacks in life I suppose.

And as always, Bhruic watched along with me. Now I know she had no idea what was going on re: a football match I got to wonder about how dogs experience disappointment.

Body Language

This emotion can exhibit in various subtle yet telling ways. How we interpret how dogs express disappointment can strengthen the bond between owners and their pets, this understanding will help us ensure their emotional needs are met and their overall well-being is maintained.

One of the main ways dogs show disappointment is through their body language.

A dog that is feeling let down may droop their ears, lower their head, and maybe have a general lack of enthusiasm.

These physical cues are often accompanied by changes in behaviour, maybe becoming less playful or lose interest in activities they usually enjoy, or seek less interaction with their owners. This can be a clear indicator that something is wrong.

Vocalisation

They’ll often use their ‘voice’ to express their feelings. Whining, sighing, and even low growls can be signs that a dog is experiencing disappointment.

These sounds are often a way for dogs to communicate their feelings of frustration or sadness, much like a human might express their disappointment through a sigh or a lament.

Much like I was last night with my wailing and choice words at my team!

Facial Expressions

Facial expressions are another crucial aspect of how dogs convey their emotions. Dogs have remarkably expressive faces, as do we, and they can exhibit looks that clearly indicate they are feeling let down or upset. (like this after the Scotland v Germany game!)

(Sad face was for show, but you can tell it's not a happy expression)

For instance, if a dog has been eagerly anticipating a walk and their owner does not take them out as expected, the dog's face might show a mix of confusion and sadness or if a promised treat or toy is promised or teased and not given, a dog might look at their owner with a sense of betrayal and disappointment.

Understanding these signs is important for dog owners so they can address the underlying issues and make adjustments to make sure their dog(s) feel happy and secure.

(Now we need to go find another team in the Tournament to support!, any suggestions?)
