Why teach your dog to sit?

One of the first and most basic commands or cues that we teach our dogs is to sit. It feels great when we achieve this understanding that what we're asking them to due is understood and performed. But why and what is the benefits of this simple 'trick'

  1. Teaching your dog basic commands like sit can help improve their overall obedience and make them easier to train in other areas.
  2. Sit is a simple, clear command that can help you communicate more effectively with your dog. By using this command consistently, you can give your dog a clear signal that it's time to focus on you and listen to your instructions. I also like using this word as it has a poignant 'S' and 'T' to lend a POP in it's pronunciation that helps grab the dogs attention.
  3. By teaching your dog to sit, you can help them develop a better sense of focus and attention. This can be especially helpful for dogs who tend to get distracted easily.
  4. For dogs who tend to jump on people, teaching them to sit can be a helpful way to redirect their energy and prevent them from jumping on you or others.
  5. In some cases, teaching your dog to sit can help reduce anxiety and stress levels. This is because the act of sitting can be calming and provide a sense of security for some dogs.

So...what we view as a simple early command has many beneficial impacts to your dog life, (and yours).
