Always supervise your dog: Even if your dog is a strong swimmer you should always supervise your dog, keep an eye on them at all times. Accidents can happen, and you want to be able to react quickly if your dog needs help.
If your dog is new to swimming, start in shallow water and gradually move to deeper water. This will give your dog a chance to get used to the feeling of swimming and build confidence.
Even if your dog is a good swimmer, a life vest can provide an extra layer of safety. This is especially important if you're boating or in a strong current. This is the one I use when training one of my three in deeper water - Ruffwear Life Jacket
Swimming can be tiring for dogs just like it can for us humans, especially if they're not used to it. Watch for signs of fatigue, such as your dog struggling to keep their head above water, and take breaks as needed.
After your dog is done swimming, rinse them off with fresh water to remove any chlorine, salt, or other chemicals that may be on their fur. This can help prevent skin irritation.
If the water is choppy or there are strong currents, it's best to avoid letting your dog swim. This can be dangerous even for experienced swimmers.
These expert safety tips can help ensure that you and your dog have a fun and safe swimming experience.
